Over the past fifty years since Independence, the population of Malawi has multiplied five times and now stands at over sixteen million. It is the most densely populated country in Africa, and is among the poorest nations in the world. The increase in the population has put great pressure on the arable land available to grow the food necessary to feed the nation.
